The Ravines

The area south of Mottola is characterized by ravines, erosive incisions that are even more than 100 meters deep, very similar to the canyons, even today dug by meteoric waters in the limestone.

These are exceptional and unique natural habitats for flora and fauna: there are holm oaks, pine, arbutus, ash, carob, wild maple and wild asparagus.

In the ravines you can find wonderful wild orchids, honeysuckle, cyclamens, hawthorn and delicate wild roses.

It is possible to meet several small birds of prey such as the lesser kestrel falcon and the common kestrel, but also the black kite, the buzzard, the harrier, the vulture and the lcommon owl.

In the ponds there are the yellow-bellied toad, typical of the ravines of southern Italy, the frog, the newt and the toad.

In the ravine of St. Blaise-Palagianello there is a small natural cavity, the cave of St. Blaise, characterized by the presence of stalactites and stalagmites, typical karst formations.
